Divorce

Rhode Island Alimony Information.

In Rhode Island alimony in a divorce is referred to as a spousal support.  Alimony after a divorce is to help provide for a spouse, under certain factors that I will list in just a moment.  Alimony is to provide for a spouse until they are able to get back on their feet after a divorce, although in some cases, the divorce courts will have alimony to be paid indefinite amount of time, again there are certain factors that will relate to that happening.  Alimony after a divorce a lot of times allows a spouse to get schooling or return to the work force after a divorce, so here is a list of factors that the divorce courts take in to how they choose how long and when alimony after a divorce is to be paid.

1.  How long was the marriage before it ended in divorce?  Was it a long marriage, or was it a marriage that was under 5 years?

2.  How each spouse acted towards each other in the marriage and also in the divorce process, alimony is not to punish one spouse, it is to help another after living a certain life style,  of possibly staying home and not being in the work force, to be able to provide, so this is something a spouse will have to learn.

3.  The over all health of each spouse is looked at, the age of each spouse, occupations of each spouse, amounts of their incomes and sources of income, along with skills to take to the work force or better themselves, after the divorce.

4.  What each spouse will be paying after he divorce, what are each spouses liabilities after the divorce.

5.  They look to see if either spouse will be unable to provide for themselves adequately after a divorce.

Now each one of those factors are taken into play in a divorce when the courts are deciding to pay alimony, a lot of times several factors together will play into how long alimony will be paid.  Although alimony can be modified at any time if there are any changes to either spouses lives, possibly marriage or even death.
